Call on any computer store these days and you’ll discover what looks like miles and miles of applications on sale. Unless you are fairly up to date with the hottest developments buying software at stores can result in you getting old and out-of-date packages. Luckily, there’s an alternative to commercial software and although it isn’t new, it’s one of the most under-exploited opportunities in the computer industry.
We’re talking about shareware – applications that you can try before buying.
Shareware has a long history and was quite widespread in the days where BBS (bulletin board systems) reigned the on the internet business. It hasn’t gone anywhere, but its rivalry with commercial packages is fierce – so fierce that it tends to fall on the back burner among new computer consumers. I believe that shareware is a far better alternative if you’re looking to purchase applications so the fact that this is such a little known area is unlucky.
The biggest advantage of shareware is the affordability. On the whole, shareware is normally less expensive than commercial programs. But don’t misinterpret the price. With shareware, inexpensive does not equal low-quality and there are lots of examples that confirm shareware often outperforms the quality of commercial software time and time again. So howmuch exactly are we talking about? You could purchase a quality word processor, spreadsheet, database program, or system utility anywhere from a mere $15 to under a hundred.
You will have far less compatibility issues if you go the shareware route. We’re not saying that shareware is compatible with all operating systems. By being able to use it first we can determine if the packages is totally compatible with our systems first. In other words, we can discover whether the software programs performs the way we want them to and should anyone try to do the same with commercial programs, they’ll be in for a big disappointment. Commercial software policy doesn’t even allow for returns, let alone “borrowing” them to check out them.
The last benefit that shareware has over commercial software programs (but certainly not the least) is its applicability. Plain and simple, shareware is the best bet when you want to keep on top of the latest release of a particular program. Sure, computer stores do their best to keep their inventory up to date, but when you can download version 5.6042 of a shareware program as opposed to buying a commercial 3.0 version from the local computer shop, there’s just no comparison.
Which brings up our next point. Just where does one get shareware? Shareware is all over the Internet and it’s really hard not to bump into it. The most widespread places to notice shareware is within thousands of download libraries, however the companies (and even independent programmers behind shareware) are increasingly offering shareware from their own websites. A simple Google or Yahoo search for a particular type of program will yield all sorts of results that point you toward items that you can check out before you purchase.
Be aware however, that since shareware is not commercial packages, you may not experience a full program the way you would if you bought the applications out of a box. Shareware may or may not be limited – meaning that some functions may not be available to you until the program is paid for. These limitations are often small and don’t interfere with the way its full version operations. They’re really just implemented as a way to prompt payment. Remember that shareware is not freeware. You shouldn’t test to use shareware as commercial software without paying for it.
About the only thing that’s similar between shareware and commercial software programs is the way in which they may be bought. With a credit card, you can be the new owner of your own software within minutes.

If you have not heard of smart phones, we’d like to hear where you have been hiding all this time. Smartphones have been all over the news and odds are, you do recognize what they are – only you identify them under a different name. Smartphones are mobile phones with computer like functions.
What is that? Aha! Yes, you have not only heard of them, you’ve most likely seen them as well. We are not certain what the inventors had in mind when first thinking of the mobile phone but with internet access, cameras etc I’m certain they would be very pleased with the progress made.
But be wary not to mistake these latest toys with sandbox devices. Sandbox devices are tools that come pre-loaded with things like calendars, calculators, and a notepad. Unlike sand box devices smart phones allow you to add new applications to them. That – and the ability to amend the content that sits on them – is what makes these phones “smart.” Some of the more admired brand names include the Blackberry, PalmSource, Nokia, and Windows CE. Yet the rage is extending to even some off-brand business names.
Standard voice-only cellular phones are becoming more and more scarce and companies realise that their clients want and need devices with lots af features. The advantage of having information at our immediate access is phenomenal – so much so that 1000′s of programmers have jumped on the opportunity to build unique applications specific to these tiny machines. As a result, you can find tons of games, databases, GPA systems, weather reporting applications, and even little encyclopedias on these things – each accessible not at the click of a mouse – but at a couple presses of a free thumb. Of course a mini keyboard is available for the text-messaging fan or for the poor fellow who can’t seem to get away from the workplace. In the latter case, don’t be shocked if you find the entire Microsoft office suite displayed within a screen no bigger than a matchbook. Is this a phase? That’s extremely unlikely. The uses extend from the meaningless teenager keeping in touch with his friends to the executive being able to correspond and interact with his business while travelling.
There is no place or marketplace where smart phones do not have a presence and that is growing all the time. The Wikipedia encyclopedia claims that “Out of 1 billion camera phones to be shipped in 2008, Smartphones, the higher end of the market with full electronic mail support, will represent about 10% of the marketplace or about 100 million units.” But what is it that makes smart phones so interesting?
As outlined, smart phones give us the ability to not only carry our information around with us where ever we go, it also gives us the ability to alter that information any place – any time. We are looking for ways to save a specific moment in time and smart phones gives us that capability. And we want to share that minute with others. At best, smart phones give us the opportunity to express ourselves impromptu with entertaining results. Trying to do the same with a unwieldy desktop workstation or laptop is to cumbersome. Even some of the smallest peripherals (digicams, digital cameras, etc.) don’t give us the same options that smart phones do. Being able to carry around a device for communication, creation, recording, and editing simply compliments the need for today’s generation to do more and then do it, faster!

The new 135 gram touch screen Nokia N8 is an awesome new smart phone that should give their competitors a run for their money . One thing we are worried about is the limited talk time of 5 hours and estimated 400 hours standby – we feel that this could have been improved .
The phone includes a 12 megapixel Carl Zeiss optics, Xenon flash camera which can shoot in high definition video, this combined with the 720p resolution it is able to deliver un-matched quality and definition when compared to other mobile phone cameras .
Included with the phone package is a HDMI connector cable which is used to connect your phone directly to your TV or monitor allowing you to watch video etc directly from the phone itself. This should prove quite useful for business users! .
The phone includes a standard 16GB of memory and this can be increased up to a maximum of 48GB with the inclusion of a micro SD card
The N8 can play back video in several formats, including MP4, Real Video and H.264.
The new Symbian 3 operating system has been improved drastically and is far superior than previous versions .
Another huge selling point is the FREE voice guided navigation. You will never have to pay for the navigation ever and most countries maps and details can be downloaded from the Nokia OVI Store. Nokia’s navigation is still one of the best around and this free service is great!
On-demand Web TV allows you to access TV channels like CNN and National Geographic and get them piped to your phone from the comfort of your bus seat. There are a number of other channels available from the Nokia OVI Store.
The Nokia N8 also takes into account the different aspects of people’s lives and you can manage your phone to take this into account – you can setup different themes for work or for play, having applications specific to the situation makes a lot of sense. Switching themes is obviously also quite easy .
Nokia’s bundled web browser is finally good enough that you don’t need to downloaded a third party browser, such as Opera. The N8 supports multitouch, so you can pinch your fingers to zoom in and out of web pages.
People can update their status, share location and photos, and view live feeds from Facebook and Twitter in a single app directly on the home screen
The N8 has a 680MHz processor with a graphics accelerator, a 640×360-pixel, 3,5-inch capacitive-touch screen, assisted GPS, and 3G with high-speed packet access. The camera, which protrudes from the back of the device a little too much for our liking, features Carl Zeiss optics and has a bright xenon flash.

Searching for internet service was always frustrating for me, because it took way too long to visit every site and find the information I was looking for. But I was speaking with a friend one day about my ISP search, and she said “You could try searching online for broadband services.” For whatever reason, I had never considered that. Recently my mom asked for help to find service and so I decided to look online. And lo and behold, I found a site that was incredibly helpful.
I live in Chicago, and there are so many ISPs here. So it didn’t make sense to search by city, as I knew that I wouldn’t necessarily be able to get service in my neighborhood. Luckily I could enter in my zip code. Once I did, I got a bunch of useful information.
The same thing happened when I entered in my mom’s zip code. All of the ISPs offering service in her area popped right up. And I could even read more specific plan information. So it was really easy to read through the list of options with her and help her to narrow down her search. I discovered that my mom only goes online to view family pictures and read email, so she really didn’t need much. And there were some great low-cost plans for her to choose from.
There were a few providers who required a contract in order to get the discounts they were offering. But my mom didn’t have to worry about that, because she’s been in the same house for 30 years and doesn’t plan on going anywhere. But for me, a contract wasn’t something I wanted, because I don’t want to be forced to stay with one company that will charge me money to switch. I was still able to find several options when I used the site.
If you’re looking for ISPs in your area, I would definitely suggest visiting this site. It provided me with really helpful information for my specific neighborhood as well as my mom’s. We both got great internet connections that are costing us less than we used to pay. They were so easy to find, and it saved us money. Definitely worth the short time it took to find them, if you ask me.

I’d recently moved, and was thinking about finding a new internet provider. But I decided it would be a headache, so I was ready to sign up with the same ISP I’d been with for years. That was, until a friend advised me to see what other options were out there. I wasn’t too convinced that was something I wanted to do, because I didn’t think saving a bit of money was worth spending possible hours. But then she told me about this free web site that would let me search for ISPs in my area. It didn’t sound too difficult, so I gave it a chance.
The site was incredible. Not only did I get a faster connection; I ended up paying a lot less than I was. It was so easy to get around that site. All I had to do was type in my zip code, and I had a list of ISPs in my area whose plans I could review. It wasn’t hard at all; even just by looking the info over quickly, it was obvious that I was missing some great deals.
I even ended up learning something. Before I found that site, I had no idea what bundles were. But after comparing packages I realized just how much I could be saving if I had my TV, phone and internet with the same provider. Now I’m paying less for all my services, and the best part is that I only have to pay one bill every month. For me, there’s nothing more convenient than that!
I also studied each provider’s contracts and fees as I compared them. Getting locked into an agreement like that just isn’t for me; I don’t know when I’ll be moving again, and the last thing I need is to deal with penalty charges for terminating my contract if I have to move. The great news is I was able to find something that had a low installation fee and no equipment fees.
I’m so grateful that I listened to my friend and compared ISPs in my area. I don’t want to know what I would have had to pay now if I hadn’t have found that site, but I’m pretty sure I would have been paying double for no extra value.

I’ve always found it frustrating and inconvenient to search for internet service, because it seems like you have to visit lots of sites just to get a little bit of information. Recently my mom asked me to help her find service and I found a site that turned out to be really helpful. It let me search for internet service providers by zip code.
One of the reasons I found it so helpful is because it really narrows your search down. In the past, I always searched by city, but living in Chicago, there are quite a lot of providers here. However, just because a provider offers service in a city, that doesn’t mean they offer service in my area. So being able to search by my zip code gave me results that were way more relevant.
I got the same helpful information when I typed in my mom’s zip code – all the providers near her popped right up. I could even read more about the specific plans they offered. I showed my mom the list of options she had and it was much easier for her to make a decision. She really only uses the internet for light stuff like reading e-mail and viewing pictures of her grandkids. Luckily there were some great low cost plans.
Contracts aren’t something my mom has to worry about. She’s lived in the same house for over 30 years so having a contract isn’t a concern for her. However, when I used the same site to find out if there were better deals in my area, one of the most important factors to me was finding a plan without a contract. I don’t like being forced to stay with one company like that. I want to know that I can switch at any time without having to pay a fee. There were a lot of options at the site I used.
Now that I’ve used a site that allows me to search for internet service providers by zip code, I’m never going back. I I was able to get current and relevant information for my area, as well as the area my mom lives in. We are both on new plans now and we’re both paying less than we did before. The process was simple and it led to better service and a lower cost – I’d say that’s worth the few seconds it took.

I don’t have a lot of patience and have paid more if it means I don’t have to do hours of research just to get a deal. However, when I was searching for internet service recently, I decided to take some time and find something at a reasonable price that would give me what I needed. You can imagine how pleased I was when I learned about an easy way to search for internet providers by zip code.
All I had to do was enter in my zip code. Instantly it gave me not just the names of companies who offered service, but details on the plans that were offered in my neighborhood. I actually had several choices to choose from and was able to sit down and carefully consider what my needs were, in order to choose the right plan.
One thing I was sure I wanted from the beginning was a really fast connection. I’m the kind of individual who’s online all the time, chatting with friends, streaming movies and even working from home sometimes. I have no patience for a slow connection. I found that there were a few options for lightning fast speed. I did some research on each of the companies and compared the results. I knew I needed a company that didn’t only offer fast internet, but that offered a reliable connection and good customer service as well.
I also learned about bundles, which I’ve found to be helpful. Basically, if you subscribe to cable TV, internet and phone, you can get all 3 through the same company and really save a lot. I decided to go for it and was pretty pleased to learn that I could not only pay less for bundling them, but I could actually get extra features. Now I have literally thousands of movies and TV shows available to me on demand.
Having saved so much money simply by looking for internet providers by zip code, I’ve thought about changing my impatient ways. I’ve been curious about how many other deals are out there that just only take a few minutes to research. I’m not saying I’ll be clipping coupons anytime soon, but now that I’ve found the fantastic deal I have, I can definitely say that it was worth it.

When I was looking for ISPs, I wanted to make the process as easy as possible. The best place I found for doing so was a site that let me look for internet service providers by zip code. There were a few reasons that I enjoyed using this site.
For one thing, it gave me really detailed results. Those other ways to look for providers will only tell you which companies offer plans in your state or city. I live in a bigger center and just because a provider has a presence here, doesn’t mean they offer service in my neighborhood. When I was able to search by zip code, I got direct information on the companies who offer service here.
Another thing was that the site I used showed me what plans were available in my area. Once again, I live in a city and the plans offered in some areas aren’t offered in others. The last thing I wanted was to compare several plans, only to find out that they’re not offered where I live.
Once I was able to see which plans were offered, I had a few more decisions to make. There were several speed levels and I couldn’t decide what I needed. For the most part I only use the internet to research and email, but occasionally I’ll use it for downloading music or movies. As I looked at the plans, I noticed that a mid-level plan wasn’t much costlier than the bargain plan. I decided to get decent speed while still keeping my costs low.
I was careful to read all the fine print. I’d learned that lesson from a friend of mine! He did all his homework and found a plan that seemed to be the best value. However, when the time came for installation, he was charged hundreds of dollars in installation fees and equipment fees. It was all there in the plan he’d chosen, he just didn’t take the time to review it carefully.
Now that I’ve got internet service I’m really pleased with the ISP I selected. If I hadn’t found that site to search for internet service providers by zip code, I may very well have not known that this company provided service. Overall, I’ve been very satisfied with the service I’m getting and the price I’m paying. For me, doing the research really paid off.
